For a compact burnisher that slips into any apron pocket, consider the Accu-Burr Jr™. About the size and shape of a standard wood pencil, this little jewel delivers full performance in a small and attractive form.

The Accu-Burr Jr™ is a complete assembled tool consisting of the Accu-Burr™ AB1 Burnisher Rod and two brass handles.

If you've ever struggled with turning a hook (or burr) on a scraper, or simply thought there might be a better way, Blackburn Tools and Union Manufacturing Company have designed this patent pending tool for you. Meticulously designed in every detail to be the most versatile burnisher ever, the patent pending Accu-Burr Jr™ is the first and only burnisher you'll need on your bench.

Advantages of the patent pending Accu-Burr Jr™ include:

  • Forming a precise and repeatable burr simultaneously on both edges of a scraper.

  • No deflection of thin card scrapers, or profile scrapers that are necessarily held high above the vise.

  • Will work on any shape, even reaching into concave scraper edges with greater than 3/32" curve radius.

  • Works on any hardness of scraper; we've even tested this successfully on HSS steel blades (approximately RC 65).

  • Works on any thickness scraper, from 0.010" up to 0.100" thick.

  • Solid brass handles

For centuries, the common burnisher has remained largely unchanged. A simple rod of hardened steel held in a handle, their use depended largely on the user's freehand skills. Some mounted that rod in a more sophisticated holder to guide the process, but these, too, had distinct disadvantages.

The heart of the patent pending Accu-Burr Jr™ burnisher is a 3/16" diameter carbide rod with three v-shaped grooves around the middle of the rod. These grooves are precision ground to turn a fine, medium, or coarse (5°, 10°, or 15°, respectively) burr simultaneously on both sides of any prepared scraper edge. Because quality and precision matter greatly for the function of this tool, we use a premium American-made grade of carbide, sourced from and ground by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading carbide tooling manufacturer.

How to use: No burnisher gives better results with less effort. To turn a burr, hold your patent pending Accu-Burr Jr™ carbide burnisher PERPENDICULAR to the prepared scraper edge and centered on either the fine, medium, or coarse groove (the deepest groove is for the coarse burr). Using a moderate downward force on the burnisher, draw it firmly and smoothly along the length of the prepared scraper edge (a drop of oil on the burnisher will make this action even smoother). Less than 20 pounds of force is required to form a burr; it is less than most people use with a traditional burnisher. This burnishing will raise a burr that can be barely felt with your finger; if no burr is felt, repeat as needed, but with increasing force, until a nearly imperceptible burr is formed along the entire length of the scraper. It is better to start with light force and gradually increase as needed.

Made in the USA.

Please note: it is possible to break the rod by using excessive force while turning a burr. Though carbide is very hard, it can be brittle. Additionally, dropping an Accu-Burr Jr can result in breaking of the rod. This is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
